Cycling by the seaside and countryside!
There has never been a better time to explore the Fylde Coast by cycle. Cycling is permitted on promenades ranging from Lytham to Fleetwood with Blackpool and Cleveleys in between – with much of the way traffic free. Away from the coast the gently undulating Fylde countryside offers easy cycling.
Blackpool
Blackpool is one of the Lancashire cycling demonstration towns. The promenade is being developed as the resort's main cycle route with linking routes inland to different areas of the town and Stanley Park.
Lytham St Annes
Lytham St Annes has a network of signed cycle routes on minor roads and linking cycle paths, and you can now cycle on the promenade.
Wyre (Including Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Thornton and Poulton-le-Fylde)
The newly completed Cleveleys promenade is a delight and the traffic free section of the promenade from Rossal the Fleetwood offers spectacular views of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District.
Cycling on the Promenade
Legally you can currently cycle on the promenade between:
Blackpool North Pier and Fleetwood and from Blackpool South Shore from Stargate (the sand dunes) to South Pier.
BUT…..
Cycling is to be allowed on the Central Promenade shortly when all the sea front defence works are completed. Watch this space!
Blackpool North Pier - Fleetwood (9 miles/14.5km).
This is a great family route with lots of good stuff for the children.
Head out of Blackpool northwards following the clear signposts for the sea front cycle route to Fleetwood along the sea front cycle route (Jubilee Cycle way ) . The promenade is part of National Cycle Route 62 which, when fully open, will run round the coast from Preston to Lancaster.
North Pier. Opened in 1863, Blackpool's oldest and largest pier.
North Shore. There is a cafe and public toilets at Gynn Square
Anchorsholme Park (3 miles/5km). A café, tennis courts, bowling greens, putting green and pitch and put are available here. The ferry "Riverdance" washed up here in 2008.

Cleveleys (3.75 miles/6km). Enjoy the new promenade. Paviliion Cafe and toilets on the promenade , or visit main shopping street.
Jubilee Gardens, Cleveleys (4 miles/6.5km). The gardens include a children's play area and wheeled sports area.
Fleetwood (8.5 miles/13.5km). Continue up the promenade to Fleetwood sea front where you have stunning views across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland and Bowland Fells. Watch the ferry from North Ireland glide into the estuary. There are plenty of sea front attractions to enjoy including swimming pool, boating lake, crazy golf and Marine Hall with its diverse range of shows and events. There is a lovely sandy beach too, so take your bucket and spade.
Fleetwood Town Centre. With its range of shops, famous market and on street tramway is situated just off the promenade.
Knott End Ferry (9 miles/14.5km). You can catch the ferry for the short journey to Knott End. The lanes of Over Wyre offer some delightful cycling.
Blackpool South Shore (Stargate – South Pier) (1.5 miles).
You are able to cycle on the South Shore between Stargate and South Pier, past the Pleasure Beach with its white knuckle rides and the sculptures on the sea front.
Blackpool Town Centre to Stanley Park and Staining
Talbot Square to Staining
This takes you to the delightful Stanley park with Café and toilets, Blackpool Zoo and the lovely semi-rural cycleway around the De Vere Golf course and onto the Marton Mere nature reserve.
